This Friday the New York Mets achieved their second victory of the season by beating the Cincinnati Reds 3-2. It is also the second straight win for the Queens team, which has a 2-5 record at the start of the season.
The closing of the match had Edwin Díaz taking the mound and saving his first match of the season with the Mets and the first since 2022, after at the beginning of 2023 he suffered a serious injury that left him out for the entire season.
After reaching the ninth inning with a score of 3-1 for the Mets thanks to a home run by Jeff McNeil in the eighth inning. The metropolitans’ star closer made his grand appearance to close the night’s match in Cincinnati.
Edwin Díaz was a little complicated in his performance on the mound. But nevertheless he was able to finish making the save to close the Mets’ victory against the Reds.
The first to appear in the batter’s box against Díaz was Jonathan India, who managed to get on base after a ground ball to the pitcher that Díaz himself ended up turning into an error.
Spencer Steer managed to get six pitches off Edwin Díaz before ending up going to first base on a walk. With two men on base, the night seemed to get complicated for the Puerto Rican.
Christian Encarnación-Strand hit a grounder to first base that forced the first out of the inning. However, the Reds still had a serious threat with men at second and third.
A sacrifice fly to center field by Jaimer Candelario brought in the second run for the Reds. The score was 3-2 and with a man on second, the tie could come with a hit.
However, Edwin Díaz got the ball and against Jake Fraley he managed to get the last out of the game after striking him out after taking the maximum count.
In this way Edwin Díaz got his first save of the season. Despite the fact that he had already pitched three innings in this nascent campaign, in which he, by the way, left an ERA of 0.00 with five strikeouts and just one hit allowed.
Díaz in search of his season saves record
In the 2018 season when he played for the Seattle Mariners, Edwin Díaz ended up saving 57 games. He recorded the second best record of saves in a season in MLB history, only behind Francisco Rodríguez who saved 62 games in 2008.
Now 100% after his injury, the 29-year-old closer will look to break his personal record this season with the New York Mets and this Friday he already achieved his first save.
