Surreal images were experienced this Sunday during the Turkish Cup final between the two teams with the most tradition in the country, Galatasaray and Fenerbahce, when the latter decided to leave the field of play just 50 seconds into the match.
The problem with Fenerbahce, although it was experienced this Sunday, had its basis since Wednesday when it asked the Turkish football federation to allow it to postpone the match against Galatasaray for the upcoming Conference League semifinal against Olympiacos next Thursday. so they decided to take “justice into their own hands.”
In fact, the first measure that the club from the capital Istanbul was to put its U-19 team on the field, but as soon as Galatasaray put the ball in motion, it launched a long pass that the scorer Mauro Icardi sent into the back of the net. before the minute and cut short all plans to try to win the Cup.
For that reason, the Fenerbahce coach, İsmail Kartal, sent his team back to the locker room to abandon the match and let the referee confiscate and sentence the victory to Galatasaray.
In addition, the Fenerbahce board had already planned the measure because it also asked its fans not to attend the match held at the Sanlıurfa GAP Stadium.
The team had also already had to suffer on the previous league day, against Trabzonspor, a field invasion with rival fans wanting to hit the Fenerbahce players, so they complained to the federative body and it dismissed all charges.
The decision to abandon the competition could bring disciplinary measures to the team by the Turkish federation, which could range from deducting points in the local competition to administratively relegating the team to the second division.
