The star pitcher of the New York Yankees, Gerrit Cole, began his rehabilitation process this Monday for the injury he suffered approximately a month ago and left the team excited by stating that he felt good after throwing his first pitches on flat ground.

“It was great, 22 of 25 in the chest. I’m always counting. It’s hard to turn that off,” said the 31-year-old right-hander after throwing a total of 25 pitches at a distance of 60 feet.

As indicated by Cole himself in agreement with the Yankees’ medical staff, two more similar sessions are planned for this week.

It was the current American League Cy Young who predicted his return to the New York rotation for June 1, right in the middle of the MLB season. This, after finding an alternative route to surgery that would surely have left him out of action for the entire year.

After making a preseason start on March 11, Gerit Cole felt unexpected fatigue in his right arm, so he underwent x-rays in Tampa, which did not clarify the picture much.

He subsequently traveled to Los Angeles to be evaluated by Dr. Neal ElAttrache on March 14 and he confirmed that the ulnar collateral ligament is intact and that he does not need to undergo Tommy John surgery, something that undoubtedly represented pleasant news for the pitcher. and the Yankees.

Once the situation was clarified, Cole was told that the method to return to action would be based on spending four weeks without pitching and then begin the rehabilitation process with which he is expected to be able to return to the rotation after 10 or 12 weeks.

Gerrit Cole has been a big investment for the Yankees since signing in 2020, and he’s been healthy most of the time, with the exception of a strained left hamstring and a brief stint on the Covid disabled list. in 2021.

The last time the right-hander had been sidelined for a long period was in 2016 when he belonged to the Pittsburgh Pirates and it was due to a right elbow problem.

Since joining the Bronx Bombers, the right-hander has made 108 starts, leaving a record of 51-23 with an ERA of 3.08, after having worked a total of 664 innings in which he has struck out 816 opponents, leaving a WHIP of 1,011. .
