The historic boxer and current promoter, Óscar de la Hoya, surprised the world of boxing by revealing the reason why the Mexican and undisputed super middleweight champion, Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez, is angry with him to the point of having finished any type of relationship with him and to affirm that he is a disloyal person in business.
These statements were made by the owner of The Golden Boy Promotions during an interview offered for Fight Hype, where he maintained that it was not until 2024 that he managed to realize the true reason why Canelo Álvarez hates him so much.
“I just realized, and I’m going to tell you exactly what happened, and why Canelo is so angry with me. One day, a reporter asked me if I thought Canelo needs another coach, and I answered the reporter that maybe it was a good idea, because I had seven coaches in my career, and I learned things from each coach, they all taught me something new. I said that maybe Eddy Reynoso can get some help,” he said.
De La Hoya stated that this comment that he made in an uncomfortable manner to Canelo generated a breaking point in their relationship and even moments after this occurred the Mexican champion himself complained about those statements, considering them a disloyal act towards him.
“They told me I was disloyal, how could I say that, and that’s how it all started. But how can someone who jumps from promoter to promoter, from contract to contract, from television station to television station talk about loyalty. “Who is the disloyal one here?” added the promoter.
“Did I ever get a thank you from him? Never. When I got him the biggest contract of his life, did I get a thank you? Never. So who is the disloyal one? But I don’t care anymore,” Óscar de la Hoya concluded in his statements.
