The former Vice President of the United States, Republican Mike Pence, attacked former President Donald Trump this Monday for his position of supporting the ban on abortion at the national level. Pence asserted that it is a “slap” to the pro-life Americans who voted for him in 2016 and 2020.
“President Trump’s retreat on the right to life is a slap in the face to the millions of pro-life Americans who voted for him in 2016 and 2020,” Pence wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
The former vice president, who has already said he will not support Trump’s re-election, recalled that the Trump-Pence administration helped send Roe v. Wade “to the ash heap of history where he belongs.” He added that they gave the pro-life movement the opportunity to “compassionately support women and unborn children.”
Pence asserted that “a majority of Americans,” without citing any polls, want to see minimal national protections for the unborn in federal law. And he took the opportunity to criticize the Republicans themselves.
Attack the Republicans
“Today, too many Republican politicians are too willing to wash their hands of the battle for life,” the former vice president said. “Republicans win at life when we boldly tell the truth and stand on the principle we all know to be true: Human life begins at conception and must be defended from the womb to the grave.”
Last month, the former vice president had warned that he would not support Trump because, according to him, he has moved away from conservative values, in addition to the assault on Congress on January 6, 2021.
“As much as our Republican candidate or other candidates seek to marginalize the cause of life, I know that pro-life Americans will never relent until we see the sanctity of life returned to the center of American law in every state in this country.” “Pence added in his publication this Monday.
In a video posted Monday to his Truth Social network, Trump rejected calls to back a nationwide abortion ban. Instead, he stressed the importance of the will of the people on the issue of abortion, urging people to “follow your heart, your religion or your faith.”
“My opinion is that now that we have abortion, where everyone wanted it from a legal standpoint, the states will determine it by voting or legislation or maybe both, and what they decide should be the law of the land, in this case, the law of the state,” Trump declared. “Many states will be different. Many will have a different number of weeks or some will be more conservative than others and that’s what they will be.”
Despite the stance, President Joe Biden criticized Trump, accusing him of endangering the health of millions of women in the country.
“Because of Donald Trump, one in three women in the United States already lives under radical and dangerous bans that put their lives at risk and threaten doctors with prosecution for doing their job. And that’s only going to get worse,” Biden said.
