Derek Medina published a photo of his wife Jennifer Alfonso’s body on Facebook shortly after he shot her dead in August 2013 and, a decade later in a telephone interview with Telemundo, revealed the reason why he shared the horrendous crime in the social network.

“Why did I post the photo? It was not done with bad intentions. I did it because my stepdaughter was there and she was basically trying to get the family to go and not tamper with the evidence or do anything corrupt. He was not made to be that monster that the media tries to make him believe; The media is trying to make billions of dollars and turn me into a monster. And I am not a monster,” she declared.

Derek Medina, sentenced to life in prison in Florida, said that the nickname “Facebook Killer” has made him feel bad. “They destroyed my name. “My name is Derek Medina, not the Facebook killer,” he said.

The man not only published the photo on the social network, he also shared a message that caused a stir: “I am going to go to prison or (I am going to) be sentenced to death for killing my wife. I love you friends, I’m going to miss you. Take care, Facebook people, you’re going to see me on the news. My wife was hitting me and I will not tolerate this abuse anymore, therefore I did what I did. I hope they understand me”.

Miami-Dade Police Detective Juan Segovia said it took authorities about three hours to get Facebook to remove the violent photo. Telemundo added in its documentary that the Facebook company expressed that the monitoring of graphic content has improved since 2013, the year in which the crime occurred, thanks to artificial intelligence.

“He took his own life”

Carolyn Anderson, mother of Jennifer Alfonso, said that with the publication Derek Medina only wanted the attention he finally got, and that he still wants it. “I think in his mind he feels that he is a victim, I think he truly believes that,” she said.

“I don’t think he is a monster, I think he is a very confused person. I feel sorry for him, really. From all my heart. Because he took his own life and everything he’s been through and everything he says about being turned into a monster, that’s his fault. That he is not able to look in the mirror and see his own guilt,” Anderson said.

“I would tell him that I am very sorry that he made that decision that changed so many lives, those of his parents, his aunt, mine, my children; that he needs to be honest with himself and realize what he has done. And ask for forgiveness, not to me or my children, but to God for what he did,” he added.

Derek Medina told Telemundo that he would not change anything that happened because, he insisted, he had to defend himself. Currently, the man seeks to have a new trial and be released.
