The Organization of American States (OAS), at the request of Ecuador, scheduled an extraordinary meeting for Tuesday, which will focus on the diplomatic incident of the invasion of the Mexican embassy in that country, which has caused a break in diplomatic relations.

The OAS meeting, which is scheduled for 3:00 pm local time in Washington DC, will address the “Standards of Diplomatic and Asylum Relations,” and the meeting is expected to facilitate a constructive dialogue that will help resolve the current crisis and that similar incidents can be prevented in the future, EFE reported.

For his part, the president of the OAS, Luis Almagro, who had anticipated his intention to call a meeting of the Permanent Council to discuss the conflict, has condemned the assault on the embassy. At the same time, he expressed his solidarity with the victims of the inappropriate actions that affected the Mexican embassy in Ecuador.

The conflict broke out last Friday, when Ecuadorian security forces assaulted the Mexican embassy in Quito with the aim of arresting former Vice President Luis Glas, a close ally of former leftist President Rafael Correa. Mexico had granted Glas political asylum and had plans to transfer him out of Quito last weekend.

The government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador broke diplomatic relations with the South American nation, chaired by Daniel Noboa. Given this, Mexican diplomatic personnel in Ecuadorian territory left the country through a commercial flight, and have had the support of allied embassies, as announced on Saturday by the Secretary of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, Alicia Bárcena.

“On instructions from President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, our diplomatic staff returns to Mexico from Quito via commercial flights with the support of friendly embassies,” the official declared in a statement, which was cited by the EFE agency.
