The experienced Argentine strategist of Inter Miami, Gerardo “Tata” Martino, gave a public recommendation to the MLS by asking that its transfer rules be relaxed so that the league continues to grow and its teams can become more attractive and competitive.

Just minutes after Inter Miami’s 4-1 win over the New England Revolution, which culminated in a double from Lionel Messi, Tata Martino made the comment in favor of the MLS being able to compete with more regular teams than those of Liga MX in tournaments like the one currently being played in the Concacaf Champions League.

“This competition (the Concacaf Champions League), which is very important to us, takes us at the beginning of the season, we are just starting and we already have round-trip matches with Nashville, Monterrey. The reality is that to face those teams we need to have other types of players,” said Martino in the press conference after the game at Gillette Stadium.

MLS currently has a contracting format based on the salary limit and with three designated players per team who have access to contracts with very favorable economic conditions.

“We have to modify the flexibility for the players to hire, which I think even soon there may be changes, and then stop on the FIFA date. This means that sometimes teams do not end up taking risks to bring in national team players,” he added.

Regarding the result of the match that was played in front of 65,000 spectators, Messi scored his second consecutive double and has scored in six consecutive games in the MLS. He is the top scorer in the league with nine goals, ahead of Colombian Cristian “Chicho” Arango, who the previous week was proclaimed as the best in the league.

The Argentine scored two goals and gave an assist to the Uruguayan Luis Suárez.

“People in all stadiums come to see Leo, to encourage Leo, that’s true. But then he wants his team to win. “We are motivated by the atmosphere we find,” Martino concluded before continuing his route to the locker room.
