The judge investigating possible irregularities in contracts of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has allowed its former president Luis Rubiales to keep his passport, but has imposed on him the obligation to inform and request permission from the court if he wishes to travel outside of Spain.
According to EFE, Rubiales must also inform the court about the duration of his stay abroad and the address where he will stay every time he wants to leave the country. The judge has established that the frequency of court appearances will be monthly, instead of biweekly as the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office had requested.
Judge Delia Rodrigo investigates Rubiales for alleged crimes of unfair administration and corruption in business. The investigation focuses on possible irregularities in the contracting of events and the allocation of audiovisual rights.
The judge has considered that there is not enough evidence to order Rubiales’ preventive detention, but has taken precautionary measures to prevent him from fleeing the country or hindering the investigation.
The judge’s decision has been criticized by some sectors who believe that Rubiales should be in preventive detention. However, others have defended her presumption of innocence and noted that the investigation is still ongoing.
The judicial investigation is expected to progress in the coming weeks and months. The judge must decide if there is sufficient evidence to formally charge Rubiales for the crimes of which he is accused.
