House Democratic leaders said in a joint statement Tuesday that they would vote to help save House Speaker Mike Johnson if far-right Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., pushes his dismissal as promised.
“Since the beginning of this Congress, House Democrats have put people above politics and found bipartisan common ground with traditional Republicans to achieve real results,” said House Democratic leaders. , according to NBC News.
They added: “At the same time, House Democrats have aggressively rejected MAGA extremism. “We will continue to do just that.”
The joint statement was signed by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York; Minority Leader Katherine Clark of Massachusetts; and Caucus Chairman Pete Aguilar of California.
“It will not succeed”
Taylor Greene has repeatedly threatened to push for a vote to impeach Johnson, as they did with former President Kevin McCarthy, after he brought to the floor a vote on aid to Ukraine. Although the radical has not said when she will do it, two Republicans have already said that they will support her.
Due to the slim majority of Republicans in the House of Representatives, they could impeach Johnson if a few more of them join Greene’s initiative and Democrats vote in favor, something that will not happen, according to Democratic Party leaders.
“If she invokes the motion, she will not succeed,” Democrats said in the joint statement.
At a Johnson press conference held just as the statement came out, he was asked if there was a deal with Jeffries to save his presidency, to which he responded: “No, there is no deal at all.”
“I have to do my job. We have to do what we believe is right. What the country needs now is a functioning Congress,” Johnson told reporters, according to NBC News.
Greene insists
After the Democrats’ joint statement came out, Taylor Greene insisted that she will move forward with her plan to remove Johnson from office.
“Mike Johnson is officially the Democratic Speaker of the House. Here is his official endorsement of his presidency. “What dirty deal did Johnson make to get support from Democrats,” he wrote. “He should resign, change parties, and continue voting for Biden’s invasion of America’s open borders, endless wars, and full-term abortion on demand.”
He added that it would give Democrats and Republicans the opportunity to “support the president chosen by Democrats” without saying when the vote would take place.
