Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul announced in a statement that Mount Horeb police officers killed a young man who was allegedly an active shooter outside Mount Horeb High School.

Mount Horeb authorities had previously said that a gunman who never entered the building was “neutralized” outside the district’s high school building on Wednesday.

The gunman was a high school student

For his part, prosecutor Josh Kaul stated that the suspect was a minor and attended the Mount Horeb school district, but they did not provide the identity of the dead student.

The school was placed on lockdown while police responded to a report of a person with a gun standing outside. They reported that the suspected student was not able to enter the school.

Meanwhile, school officials kept parents informed through social media.

Police used deadly force

Prosecutor Kaul acknowledged that Mount Horeb police officers used deadly force to take down the student suspect, WKOW reported.

Governor Tony Evers sent a message through his Facebook account where he said he was aware of the situation at the high school.

“I have been informed about the incident at the Mount Horeb School District and am closely monitoring the situation. “I am praying for the health and safety of our children, educators and staff, and grateful for the first responders who are working quickly to respond.”

School buses remained lined up along several streets outside the school. Authorities had used tape to surround the school where the accident occurred, the nearby high school and the playing fields between the two buildings, the AP said.

Classes will resume on Friday

The Department of Justice (DOJ) Office of School Safety will provide support to students and staff in district buildings on Thursday. School will not be in session. Superintendent Salerno said he hopes to resume classes on Friday, WKOW reported.

Students were able to meet their families at the bus parking lot at 421 W. Garfield Street at 6:45 p.m. local time. No students, other than the alleged gunman, were physically injured during the incident.

The Criminal Investigation Division (DCI) of the Department of Justice is responsible for carrying out the investigation.
