The founder of Golden Boy Promotions, Óscar de la Hoya, sent a legal text this Thursday to Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez in which he requests that the Mexican retract the accusations he made publicly where he claimed that the promoter had defrauded him during the organization of his fight against Gennady Golovkin.
At a press conference, Canelo Álvarez recalled the 12 years in which Óscar de la Hoya served as his promoter, but instead of using warm and grateful words, he dedicated himself to ranting and launching the accusation, something that did not go down well with the former boxer’s entourage. .
For this reason, the Golden Boy sent the minutes to Tapatío in a text to which ESPN had access through the specialized journalist of said network, Mike Coppinger, who was also one of the first to point out Ryan García’s positive doping test before the fight against to Devin Haney.
“Oscar De Hoya today sent Canelo Álvarez a legal letter, obtained by ESPN, demanding that the star boxer retract his “defamatory accusations” that Oscar stole money from GGG (Gennady Golovkin) and other fighters and that Canelo also cease and Please desist from making more similar comments. The ESPN story is coming,” the reporter commented through the social network X (formerly Twitter).
To date, Canelo Álvarez has not commented on the matter but it is not ruled out that he must remain silent because he could face legal proceedings if he continues with his controversial statements.
De La Hoya’s “demand” comes just a few hours after the press conference for the Canelo Álvarez fight in which they almost fought due to the grudges between the two and all, in part, due to the criticism of the Guadalajara-born towards the former world champion.
We will have to wait to find out if De la Hoya’s letter will have legal consequences or if, on the contrary, everything is part of the extensive history of controversies and accusations that since 2020, the date on which Canelo Álvarez put an end to their relationship by suing to their former promoter for breach of contract, they star on both sides.
