Mexico’s National Migration Institute (INM) reported Thursday that its agents found 407 foreigners “abandoned” on three buses in the southern state of Veracruz.

The vehicles, apparently intended for tourist use, were found on Tuesday on the Minatitlán-Acayucan highway. On board were 91 migrants in family groups, 264 single adults and 52 unaccompanied minors, from seven countries in the Caribbean, Central and South America, according to the EFE news agency.

Of the people who traveled alone, 12 are from Cuba; 4, from the Dominican Republic; 27, from Ecuador; 187, from Guatemala; 7, from Honduras; 21, from El Salvador and 6, from Nicaragua.

The migrants were transferred to the INM facilities in Acayucan and the families and minors to the shelter of the System for the Comprehensive Development of the Family in the same municipality.

In addition, a pregnant woman of Honduran origin, her minor daughter, a man and another person of Ecuadorian nationality were taken to the Cosoleacaque General Hospital.

This news comes after a record year in irregular migration in Mexico in 2023, with an increase of 77.2% compared to the previous year, and the same week that the Mexican and US governments agreed to implement immediate measures to reduce irregular crossings in the common border.

“The humanitarian rescue process was carried out in strict accordance with respect for the human rights of foreigners,” stated the INM, as reported by EFE.
