A fifteen-year-old girl was arrested and accused of fatally stabbing her teenage neighbor in the chest in the Bronx in broad daylight, using a kitchen knife.

The detainee was charged with involuntary manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon. Before her arraignment yesterday she was taken to a hospital, according to prosecutors, but they did not detail the reason for that transfer.

Mizell was seen surrounded by a group of 10 young people moments before she was fatally stabbed. The mob of teenagers then fled into the building, leaving the victim bleeding to death, according to a neighbor.

“I thought they were playing,” said witness Jerry White, 61. “They were just kids. “Then people ran around looking for tissues to stop the bleeding.”

Another tenant in the building recounted Mizell’s final moments as he desperately tried to stop the bleeding from his wound. “She was on the ground bleeding… face up,” said the 46-year-old man, who did not want to give her name. “I just held her wound… The knife was on the ground. “It was a kitchen knife.”

Young people are protagonists of armed violence in New York as victims and perpetrators, particularly shootings and attacks with knives in streets, homes, schools, public transportation and businesses. There are also many cases of “stray bullets” that hit people “by mistake” on the streets and even inside the New York Subway. In some shootings the victims are children and the elderly.
