The legendary narrator and member of the Boxing Hall of Fame, Jim Lampley, was quite excited by the resounding victory achieved by the undisputed super middleweight champion, Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez, against his compatriot Jaime Munguía in the duel played this Saturday at the T-Mobile Arena to retain their world championship belts; In addition to this, he assured that with this performance the Aztec proved to be the best Mexican fighter in all of history.
These statements were made by Lampley during an interview with Sean Zittel, where he offered a fairly detailed analysis of the match between both Mexicans and highlighted that Canelo demonstrated all the skills he has and the change in strategy he can make in the middle of a complicated moment. ; These words were given by him because he managed to take the advantage in a confrontation that was being dominated by Munguía in the judges’ ballots.
“I think Canelo wants to achieve another great significant achievement to crown his career as the best Mexican fighter in history. And I don’t know if there is a national identity in this sport that has more meaning than that. I am not a historian of Mexican boxing, but I do know a lot, and I put him above all the great Mexican fighters to whom I have narrated fights, including Julio César Chávez, including Marco Antonio Barrera, including Erik Morales, and there are others I could put on that list. It is a great distinction to be able to say unequivocally that you have earned it. And I think that’s what he wants,” he said.
In his statements, the renowned boxing narrator considered that Canelo Álvarez has managed to surpass all the great figures of his country such as Barrera, Morales and even Julio César Chávez himself, who is remembered as the greatest Mexican fighter of all time.
“Today he is as exciting as Barrera, Morales or Márquez, but there was a time when I didn’t think he was as bloodthirsty exciting as they were. But today is as exciting as they are, because today we know we are watching the continuation of a genuinely great career. Because there are two defeats, and both against two fighters who were not only good, but great boxers like Floyd Mayweather and Dmitry Bivol. And that means that no Mexican has beaten him, nor any Mexican-American,” he highlighted.
“That is what his audience is most interested in, and they want to see him fight against other fighters who show up to fight him in the same way that Munguía showed up tonight. And Canelo ended up being better than him, thanks to his jaw and his counterpunching ability. This was a classic Canelo. Everything that makes Canelo great was visible tonight in the ring. I love Munguía, he gave everything, he is brave, his attitude is beautiful, people adore him, but he ended up being another victim of Canelo,” concluded Lampley.
