A group of Latino voters, led by Walter Mejía, will promote voting in favor of former President Donald Trump in New York.

“The reason we created this group is because we believe that Latinos have conservative values: God, family and country,” said Mejía, who is community affairs director for state Senate Minority Leader Will Barclay.

Mejía is the founder of the group they call “United with Trump”, a group that was created in 2022 in Nassau County, on Long Island.

“Since before we formed the group we supported President Trump, most of us are people who love the president,” Mejía said in an interview. “He is that, in truth, as a candidate, he has the same values as us as Latinos, as a community of immigrants who come to this country and adore our Christian cultural values.”

Mejía said that they will promote the vote in favor of former President Trump.

“We launched it [oficialmente el grupo] last month and instead of calling it Latinos with Trump, we call it United with Trump, because we want to emphasize that our Latino community, although the majority are registered Democrats, many of us and it is quite the fear, right, people do not “He wants to admit that we are united with Trump.”

The leader of the group, interviewed at an event held by former President Trump in Manhattan with construction workers, considered that Latinos aim to “work” and defend their conservative values.

“We believe that all Latino voters come to this country to work hard, to achieve that goal that we call the American dream, right? That worker who says I want to look for a job in the United States, where can I find that job and who are they? the public officials, that person who wants to become an American, so those people are the ones we are representing as an organization,” he said.

He denies that Trump insulted immigrants

In mid-December 2023, Trump said that immigrants were “poisoning the blood of America.”

“They left… I think the real number is 15 to 16 million people in our country […]. “They are poisoning the blood of our country,” Trump said at a rally in New Hampshire.

However, Mejía denied that the former president said that.

“Notice that I, for example, have not heard those terms, I believe that the president supports immigrants quite a bit,” he stated.

He added that the economy with Biden is worse for Latinos than with Trump, although in 2020, the unemployment rate for Latinos reached 10.4%, but with Biden, as of 2021, still in the midst of the pandemic, that figure began to decrease, according to data from the Department of Labor, and currently stands at 4.5%.

“For example, during Donald Trump’s economy we saw that the economy was quite supportive of the Latino community, a community, as I have told you, right, that comes to work a lot in this country, what we as Latinos are looking for is not necessarily who is the president or who is my public official, but where is the employment, where is the work, and what we are seeing with President Joe Biden, is that the economy is bad and that American dream that we were discussing, every year is “It is going below,” defended Mejía.

What is your strategy?

Mejía said that his support will not only be for former President Trump, but also for the Republican candidates in New York.

“Not only [se apoyará al] president, but to Republican candidates,” he said. “One of the things we do as an organization is assist and train Latinos who want to run for public positions. One of the most important things as a community and organization is the focus on education.”

He added that part of his plan will be to focus on education and guide Latinos how to vote.

“Sometimes we tell ourselves as a community about civic things, the Constitution, the Republic of the United States, how to vote and how to register, so we focus on that and, as I told you, a lot on educating and assisting and creating the future Latino candidate especially with the young people,” he defended.

He added that he will seek a formal meeting with former President Trump’s campaign to organize joint events or strategies.
