The French capital is preparing to host a multitude of visitors during the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The French government estimates that 11.3 million people will attend the Olympics, which will take place from July 26 to August 11, while that 4 million more will arrive for the Paralympic Games, which will take place from August 28 to September 8.
These visitors are expected to generate a significant economic impact in the region, contributing €3.5 billion to the local economy, excluding competition tickets. This figure is comparable to the total tourism income that the Ile-de-France region receives during the entire summer season.
The majority of visitors will be French (86.7%), while around 1.5 million foreign tourists are expected to attend the Games. Among them, the most numerous will be British, Americans and Germans.
French authorities are taking measures to ensure that visitors have a safe and enjoyable experience. Security will be reinforced with a greater police presence in tourist areas and agent patrols on public transport will be multiplied by seven.
Despite some initial concerns, the French government is confident that the Olympic Games will be a success. Early data on tourism in France this year is positive, with international visitor receipts up 14% in January and February compared to 2022.
Regarding transportation, it is estimated that up to 800,000 people will have to be transported to the competition centers each day during the Games, of which 600,000 will be spectators and the remaining 200,000 accredited people.
The Paris 2024 Olympic Games promise to be a historic event, with a considerable economic and social impact on the region. French authorities are working hard to ensure everything is ready to welcome the millions of visitors expected.
