Walmart has agreed to pay $45 million following a false advertising lawsuit that accused the company of charging customers more than advertised for certain grocery products.
This class-action lawsuit, filed in Florida last year, focused on allegations that Walmart had been overcharging for some products sold by weight, such as bagged citrus products and some meats.
Class action lawsuits offer groups of people a way to join together in court and claim compensation for similar wrongs.
The company has not admitted any wrongdoing in the case, but has agreed to pay up to $500 in direct payments to affected U.S. customers.
The deadline to file a claim and receive a payment is June 5.
To obtain a refund, customers must file a claim online and provide proof of purchase of the products involved, such as sales receipts.
Those unable to provide proof could receive between $10 and $25.
The exact amount you receive depends on the number of products purchased and the total amount spent during the settlement period, which runs from October 19, 2018 to January 19, 2024.
The maximum amount Walmart will pay in such cases is $500.
This is not the first time false advertising lawsuits have seen companies pay large sums.
Recently, a Lasik eye surgery provider agreed to pay $1.25 million for misleading ads that suggested a low price that most patients were not qualified to obtain.
