The iconic former American boxer and five-division world champion, Floyd Mayweather, will return to the ring in Mexico City with a new exhibition fight that will take place on August 24, as announced this Wednesday by the organizers of the event.
The fight will take place at the CDMX Arena, located north of the Mexican capital, which is the regular venue for NBA regular season games and UFC functions.
Fernando Beltrán, one of the promoters of the fight, explained at the press conference that a retired boxer is training to arrive in good shape for the fight. He “he is going to arrive in good physical condition and will give a brave fight. It will be a fight that you will only be able to see once in Mexico, with competitiveness,” he said.
At the press conference it was not announced who the American rival would be, although there was immediate speculation that the Mexican-American Víctor Ortiz could be the rival. However, the organizers dismissed this rumor.
Mayweather’s last official fight was against mixed martial arts star Conor McGregor, whom he defeated by technical knockout.
The former boxer, also known as ‘Money’, was not present at the press conference and his absence was not justified. None of the organizers who were on site explained the reasons for the absence.
Since retiring in 2017, the 47-year-old former boxer has starred in some exhibition fights, the last one was against John Gotti III, in Florida last year. Mayweather is considered one of the best boxers of all time. He owns an undefeated record of 50 wins, 27 coming early.
Several boxing professionals will also take to the mat at the event, but Mayweather’s will be the main one.
The American hopes to offer a massive boxing class in the Zócalo, Mexico City’s largest public square, this Thursday.
