Coin collectors are willing to pay significant sums, even up to $24,000, for coins that have minting errors such as missing letters or double impressions, according to information from The Spruce Crafts, a site specializing in hobbies and numismatics.
Currency errors that give them the most value
1. Double Die – This occurs when design elements are duplicated due to die misalignment during printing.
2. Lack of mint mark: The mint mark is a letter that indicates the place of manufacture of the coin. For example, a coin minted in Philadelphia bears a “P,” and one minted in New Orleans bears an “O.” Coins without these letters are rarer and more coveted.
3. Planchette errors: Planchettes are the metal discs used to mint coins. Errors can include planchettes of the wrong shape or thickness, or even planchettes that are left blank.
4. Minting errors: These occur when the design is printed misaligned or off-center, or when it is printed on the wrong coin.
