The Mexican national team suffered a significant loss this Thursday in the face of the Copa América after it was known that Diego Lainez, winger of the Tigres UANL, entered the preliminary list of injured due to ankle problems, as reported by the Mexican Football Federation. Football, which announced that Jordi Cortizo, from the Rayados de Monterrey, will take his place in the squad.
“Diego Lainez has been dropped from our squad heading into the summer due to a discomfort in his right ankle that has been dragging on since the final part of the tournament and that unfortunately has not evolved positively. Together with Tigres, it was decided that he would leave the concentration to start his recovery process as soon as possible,” the Mexican team wrote in its X account.
This decision was not only made by the coaching staff of the Mexican team, but was also supported by the coaching staff of Tigres UANL.
In the pre-list of 31 players that was published on May 10, Lainez was included as a possible squad. The player was in the race to earn a place in the continental tournament, in the friendly matches that his country is about to play.
Lainez is expected to rejoin the Tigres UANL soon and Cortizo will join the team’s training sessions to prepare and be in full condition for the friendlies against Bolivia, on May 31; Uruguay, on June 5, and three days later, with Brazil.
Once this schedule of friendly games is completed, the Mexico coach, Jaime Lozano, will announce the list of those summoned to the continental tournament that will take place in the United States from June 20 to July 14.
