Inter Miami and Vancouver Whitecaps play on Saturday at BC Place in Vancouver, Canada for a new Major League Soccer (MLS) date.
But the Whitecaps themselves informed their fans of the possible absence of Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez and Sergio Busquets.
“While no official update has been received on the availability of Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez and Sergio Busquets for this weekend, we understand that they will not be making this trip. Unfortunately, we have no control over who plays for our rival, and it was important for us to communicate to our fans as soon as possible,” said Axel Schuster, CEO of Whitecaps FC.
Inter Miami has not made an official statement regarding its rival’s press release.
Saturday’s game marks the first game between Inter Miami and Vancouver Whitecaps in Major League Soccer; They had not previously faced each other due to being in opposing conferences.
Schuster also indicated: “We always want our best players to face our rival’s best players, and to face players of the highest level, that is especially exciting for our team.”
And he clarified: “We know that there will also be many disappointed followers. We remain committed to making this a special experience for everyone. It will continue to be an incredible atmosphere and a celebration of football for our city. “We have incredible fans, we have a good team and Saturday’s home game is very important for us.”
Whitecaps expect a record crowd in the MLS era on Saturday, selling out tickets and hosting “the largest street party in team history.” To counteract no-shows, Vancouver will offer a 50 percent discount on all food and beverages inside the stadium.
