It is no secret that Alfonso Cuarón has established himself as one of the best directors on the current international film scene. However, and to the surprise of many, the Mexican was close to having a different destiny due to the professional conflict that caused him to “take the reins” of the project that catapulted him to the top: “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban”, something that changed thanks to his friend Guillermo del Toro.
Through a recent interview with the media Total Film, the director of “Roma” confessed the way in which the third film of the magical film was offered to him through producer David Heyman.
However, despite the attractive offer, the film writer also revealed that he hesitated to accept the film because he was not familiar with JK Rowling’s novel series: “I was confused because it was not on my radar at all.”
Within the same talk, Cuarón confessed that given the doubts he had about directing one of the Harry Potter films, it was his friend and also director Guillermo del Toro, who helped him make a decision thanks to his “words of encouragement.”

According to the director of “Y Tu Mama Tambien”, a film that Heyman took as a reference to offer the Harry Potter film to Cuarón due to the similarity of themes related to adolescence, Del Toro was a decisive factor in venturing into the saga. magical.
I talk to Guillermo often and a couple of days later I told him: ‘You know, they offered me this Harry Potter movie, but it’s very rare that they offer me this.’ He said: ‘Wait, wait, wait, you said you haven’t read Harry Potter?’ ”.
As mentioned by Alfonso, Guillermo’s words had an almost immediate effect on his decision: “I felt like an idiot. I hadn’t seen it like that. I went to buy the books and read them one after another. And then I realized it was an incredible story.”
After taking the reins of the project, Cuarón managed to revitalize the Harry Potter saga and turn it from a product in its infancy to a saga with international projection and greater maturity.
Thanks to this work, the Mexican director also placed himself among the best directors of the time, which allowed him to continue with other important projects such as “Children Of Men”, “Gravity” and “Roma”, the last two awarded at the awards. Oscar.
