A body was found on the New York Subway tracks near the East 28th St station in Midtown Manhattan, leading to the partial suspension of service on lines 4, 5 and 6 that run between Brooklyn and The Bronx.
An official MTA alert said trains were running behind schedule in both directions as police and emergency medical services responded to a report of a person “hit” by a train in the northbound express lane.
But police sources told Daily News that it was not clear how or when the human remains ended up there. NYPD received a 911 call reporting an unconscious person on the tracks at the station around 9:30 a.m. Friday. When paramedics arrived they declared her dead.
Police said the body remained unidentified at this time and they have not been able to determine the sex or cause of death. Northbound No. 5 trains were diverted to Manhattan’s Upper West Side on the No. 2 line from Nevins St. in Brooklyn to 149th St.-Grand Concourse in the Bronx.
Last week a man who was supposedly suffering a seizure fell onto the rails of the New York Subway in the Bronx while a train was approaching and what could have been a great tragedy was miraculously avoided by police officers who rushed to rescue him.
But these cases do not always have a happy ending. In fact, collisions of New York Subway trains with people on platforms and rails saw an alarming 25% increase between 2018 and 2022, according to MTA data.
