German footballer Toni Kroos announced his retirement from professional football a few days ago. His decision not to continue in the club of his life, and to which he has dedicated body and soul for ten years, was linked to a professional retirement.
“Today, after 10 years, at the end of the season, this life comes to an end. I will never forget this exciting and successful decade! […] At the same time, this decision means that my career as an active footballer will end this summer after the Euro. As I have always said, Real Madrid is and will be my last club,” the German said on his Instagram account.
This Saturday, Kroos played his last game as a Real Madrid player at the Santiago Bernabéu. He went out onto the green receiving a greeting from the players – his teammates were wearing his shirt. A banner that read “thank you legend”, accompanied by a photo of the footballer, was hung from the stands. A tireless ovation from the public and chants of ‘Kroos, Kroos’ in the eighth minute. Any thanks were insufficient for the German.
Farewell to Tony Kroos at the Bernabéu
At 34 years old and carrying the weight of being one of the best midfielders in the world, according to statistics, Kroos wore the captain’s armband for the last time at the Santiago Bernabéu.
In the hallway made up of teammates, wearing his shirt, and rivals, there was laughter knowing how little the German likes to be the center of attention. The fans are capable of giving back, at least a minimum, of everything that Toni has contributed to the Madrid fans. “Referee, don’t whistle that we’re leaving”, “goodbye, genius”, “thank you for so much, maestro”, “thank you, legend”, were some of the messages that the fans held up on banners as a tribute to the German.
In the 86th minute, the time came. Ancelotti removed Kroos from the field, who left in the purest “German style.” He said goodbye to his companions with a hug, but without shedding a tear. He applauded the stands, and went to the bench, where he hugged the Italian coach and each of his teammates. Until now, Kroos kept a cold but grateful face.
He could not avoid tears when hugging his family. Her three children were waiting for him, and the youngest quickly hugged him, crying. Kroos collapsed, burst into tears hugging his children. A cry shared by a large part of the Madrid fans and their teammates, who said goodbye, with great sadness, to a great captain. Of course, this has not been Toni’s last match, as he still has one last dance left in London. A Champions League final that will allow him to retire in style and close a cycle just as he started it: with winning the European Cup. Goodbye, Toni.
