Club América managed to revalidate the title it had achieved in the Apertura 2023 tournament of the Liga MX after this Sunday it beat Cruz Azul 1-0 at the Azteca stadium and was crowned champion of the Clausura 2024 Tournament, to add the fifteenth star in its history.
A solitary goal by Henry Martín from the penalty spot in the 78th minute was enough for América to win their second consecutive Cup and join other two-time champions such as Atlas and Club León.
Both teams arrived with the need for victory after they tied 1-1 in the first leg thanks to goals from Uriel Antuna (9′) and Julián Quiñones (16′), which left the tie open for a second leg that It was going to be transcendental.
Although both Cruz Azul and América took to the field with the aim of scoring the title, Los Cementeros were the most incisive, with chances from Antuna himself, Ángel Sepúlveda and Gonzalo Piovi, who were met with a response from the goalkeeper of the champions, Ángel Malagón.
In fact, one of the drives ended with a goal by Lorenzo Farabelli near the end of the first half, which was annulled by the VAR both for an offside in the previous play and for a foul on the América defender, Igor Lichnovsky. .
Faced with so much rival offensive, América tried to come out more organized during the second half and that passivity was essential to capitalize on an error by the Cruz Azul defense that ultimately meant the only goal of the match.
At 71′, striker Rodolfo Rotondi lost the ball in a duel with Alejandro Zendejas, which gave way to center back Israel Reyes in the visitors’ area.
Out of desperation, Rotondi himself swept to take the ball away from Reyes but instead ended up knocking him down and the principal did not hesitate to sentence the maximum penalty in favor of América.
After the claim of the Cruz Azul players, the referee decided to consult with the VAR screen but it only lasted a few seconds to ratify the penalty shot that Henry Martín crossed to the right of Kevin Mier to give definitive figures to the match and a new title for America.
