Mexican Red Bull driver Sergio “Checo” Pérez expressed his frustration and discontent after being forced to abandon the Monaco Grand Prix due to an accident with Haas’ Kevin Magnussen.

Perez, who had won in Monaco in 2022, was involved in an incident on the first lap of the race when Magnussen touched him from behind, causing his Red Bull RB20 to lose control and crash into the barriers. The impact left Pérez’s car severely damaged, forcing him to abandon the car.

What bothered Pérez the most was the FIA’s decision not to investigate the incident. According to the Mexican, the impact was strong enough to merit an investigation and a possible sanction for Magnussen.

“It seemed incredible to me that there was no investigation,” Pérez told the media. “In three minutes they made the decision not to investigate it when it was such a serious accident. It is very frustrating for the team, because it should have been investigated, it is clear,” he added.

For his part, Magnussen avoided taking responsibility for the incident, arguing that Pérez did not give him enough space.

“I had Checo’s car in front of me and he didn’t leave me any space,” said the Haas driver. “He was just there and all of a sudden he came out of nowhere,” he added.

“It’s a shame not to have been able to finish the race, especially in Monaco, where I have good memories,” said Pérez. “But we have to move on and focus on the next race,” he concluded.

Pérez’s abandonment in Monaco marks a serious setback for his aspirations in the Formula 1 drivers’ championship. The Mexican is now 41 points behind the leader, Max Verstappen, his Red Bull teammate.
