Charles Leclerc was crowned the king of Monaco this Sunday by achieving a brilliant victory in the Formula 1 Grand Prix held in the iconic streets of the principality.
The Ferrari driver, who had already dominated the classification, gave his rivals no choice and led the race from start to finish, achieving his first victory of the season and the sixth of his career in F1. On the other hand, according to EFE, Leclerc became the first driver of his nationality to win at the Monac GP in the 75-year history of the premier category.
Leclerc was accompanied on the podium by Oscar Piastri, an Australian McLaren driver who pleasantly surprised by finishing in second position. The third place on the podium was occupied by the Spanish Carlos Sainz, Leclerc’s teammate at Ferrari, who achieved his twenty-second podium in the premier category.
Max Verstappen, current leader of the drivers’ championship, could not shine in Monaco and could only be sixth. The Dutch Red Bull driver was overtaken by Lando Norris (McLaren) and George Russell (Mercedes), who occupied fourth and fifth position respectively.
Verstappen’s result in Monaco allows Leclerc to cut points in the fight for the title, although the Dutchman still remains at the top of the standings with 125 points, 16 more than the Monegasque.
The Monaco Grand Prix was also marked by the spectacular accident suffered by Sergio “Checo” Pérez on the first lap. The Mexican Red Bull driver was involved in a crash with the two Haas of Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hülkenberg, which led to his abandonment and a red flag that interrupted the race for 40 minutes.
Fortunately, Pérez emerged unscathed from the accident, but his retirement is a serious setback for his championship aspirations.
