The Alfonso Pérez Coliseum was the scene of the emotional farewell of Mexican coach Javier Aguirre from Mallorca. The “Vasco”, who led the team for two seasons, said goodbye with a 1-2 victory against Getafe on the last day of LaLiga Santander.
Getafe took the lead on the scoreboard with a goal from Munir El Haddadi in the 20th minute, but Mallorca reacted strongly and managed to turn the match around, according to EFE.
The tie came in the 33rd minute thanks to a goal from Muriqi, who dedicated the goal to Aguirre with an emotional hug. The winning goal was scored by Abdón Prats in the 78th minute, unleashing madness on the vermilion bench.
The Mallorca players paid an emotional tribute to Aguirre after the final whistle of the match. They lifted him on their shoulders and gave him a lap of honor across the Coliseum lawn. The local fans also joined in the tribute and said goodbye to the Mexican coach with a standing ovation.
In a press conference after the match, Aguirre thanked the fans, the club and its players for their affection. “I leave with the satisfaction of having fulfilled the objective of keeping the team in the First Division,” he declared.
The Mexican coach also referred to his future and assured that he has nothing decided yet. “They insist that I continue. I get very tired. Is not easy. You are losing energy, it is difficult for you to move, you are getting older, things hurt, you are suddenly not in the mood. Must see. I have no idea where to go right now. People have called us and I will not lack work,” he said.
Javier Aguirre’s farewell to Mallorca was an emotional moment full of recognition. The Mexican coach leaves a great legacy at the club, having managed to keep the team in the First Division for two seasons.
