Democratic Congressman Chris Murphy on Sunday expressed concern about the massive arrival of migrants at the southern border of the United States and affirmed that only a law with bipartisan support can provide an effective and lasting solution.
Murphy, in an interview with Face the Union of CBS, emphasized the need to update laws and increase resources allocated to border security to adequately manage the current immigration crisis.
“We have to recognize that without updating the country’s laws, without sending more resources to the border, we cannot count on the numbers to remain as low as they are today,” he said.
He highlighted that currently, around 3,000 people cross the border daily, a figure that is still high compared to a decade ago.
“Many of us are simply heartbroken and sickened by the fact that our Republican colleagues in Congress continue to vote against bipartisan border security that would give us the opportunity to give the president the resources and authorities to make this a permanent change and cool the numbers,” he said.
Murphy called on his Republican colleagues: he stressed that it is crucial to put aside “political games” and support the bipartisan reforms necessary to resolve the crisis. He also noted that President Joe Biden’s abilities to issue executive orders are limited and that any attempt to close parts of the border would likely be thrown out by the courts within weeks.
“The president has such limited ability to issue executive orders that would have an impact on the border. He can’t get resources out of thin air. “If he tried to close parts of the border, I think the courts would throw it out in a matter of weeks,” he explained.
“It depends on Donald Trump and the Republicans”
The senator, chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Near East, South Asia, Central Asia and Counterterrorism, argued that only bipartisan legislation can establish order on the southwest border.
“I think the only thing that will bring order to the southwest border is bipartisan legislation. We have a bipartisan border bill, if Republicans decided to support it, it would pass and we could get it to the president’s desk. It is up to Donald Trump and the Republicans if they want to solve the problem at the border or if they want to keep the border a disaster because it helps them politically in the next elections,” he concluded.
