With just two years to go until the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the iconic Azteca Stadium is preparing for a comprehensive renovation that will leave it ready to host the opening match of the tournament.

As reported by TUDN, the works will begin next week, after the Clausura 2024 final between Club América and Cruz Azul, which will be played this Sunday, May 26. The stadium is expected to be completely renovated by summer 2026.

Plans for the renovation of the Azteca Stadium include a renovation of the stadium façade and LED lights will be installed. There will also be a modernization of the interior, change of seats, new changing rooms under the boxes and a new access tunnel will be created for the players to the field. On the other hand, high definition LED screens will be installed throughout the stadium.

During the remodeling, Club América will play its home games at the Ciudad de los Deportes Stadium, sharing the stadium with Cruz Azul and Atlante.

This remodeling will turn the Azteca Stadium into an even more modern and functional venue, ready to host world-class sporting events.

Some additional details about the remodel:

  • Cost: The total cost of the remodeling is estimated at around 2 billion Mexican pesos.
  • Duration: The renovation is expected to last approximately 18 months.
  • Impact on fans: Fans will be able to continue enjoying Club América matches at the Ciudad de los Deportes Stadium during the renovation.
  • The Azteca Stadium renovation is an important project that will help ensure this historic stadium remains one of the best in the world
