The Mexican airline, considered the most important in the country, will suspend its flights to Ecuador from July 1 to December 18, 2024 in the midst of the diplomatic conflict between both countries, as confirmed by the airline company.
Aeroméxico did not specify the details about the temporary cancellation of the route from Mexico City to Quito, but some Ecuadorian media pointed out that the procedures have become complicated in the midst of the crisis and others cited that the flow of travelers has decreased.
Reduction of passengers to Ecuador
The Ecuadorian newspaper La Hora said that the Mexican airline “will stop flying to Quito due to a significant reduction in the market due to the complication in obtaining the requirements to travel to the country.”
“This measure is affecting the Quito-Mexico City route, which is the only one currently operating in the country,” the newspaper added.
For its part, the local media Primicias pointed out that the reduction in the Ecuadorian market is a consequence of the complications in obtaining the mandatory visa that Mexico requires of Ecuadorians.
Visa problems
“Access to consular documents, such as the Mexican visa, has been complicated for Ecuadorians following Ecuador’s assault on the Mexican Embassy on April 5, 2024. For this reason, Mexico decided to indefinitely close its consular services in the country. , forcing Ecuadorians interested in processing visas to that destination to travel to Chile, Colombia or Peru to do so,” explained Primicias.
Aeroméxico’s announcement occurs almost two months after the breaking of diplomatic relations between Mexico and Ecuador following the assault, on April 5, by the Ecuadorian Police on the Mexican Embassy in Quito to arrest the former vice president (2007-2017) Jorge Glas, who had been sheltered there since December.
Mexico announced the indefinite closure of its Embassy, while Ecuador suspended its consulates in Mexican territory on May 15, which has complicated the attention of travelers in both nations, particularly because Ecuadorians need a visa to travel to the North American country.
Ecuadorian police entered the Embassy for the vice president
A group of Ecuadorian police officers entered the Mexican Embassy in Quito on the night of April 5 to arrest former Vice President Jorge Glas, who on the same day the Government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador granted asylum after he entered that legation. from December 2023.
The United States Department of State (DOJ) condemned the violation of the Vienna Convention that led to Ecuador’s assault on the Mexican Embassy in that country and urged Washington’s two allies to “resolve their differences in accordance with international standards.
