China urged Israel this Tuesday “to listen to the voice of the international community” and “stop its offensive” against a displaced persons camp in Rafah, in the south of the Gaza Strip, which recently caused the death of at least 45 people and left hundreds injured.

The spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Mao Ning, expressed in a press conference the Asian country’s “serious concern” about Israeli military operations.

The spokesperson assured that China “has taken note” of the decision of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which asked Israel to immediately stop its operations in Rafah, and urged that this measure be “implemented as soon as possible.”

Mao reiterated China’s “consistent and clear position” on the conflict, “opposing any action that violates international law,” including international humanitarian law.

“It is necessary for the international community to work together to alleviate and end the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza,” added the spokesperson, while pointing out a “general consensus in favor of a ceasefire to end the fighting, protect civilians and alleviate the humanitarian crisis.”

Nearly a million people have fled Rafah, most heading west toward the beaches of Al Mawasi, where they are overcrowded and without sanitation or drinking water.

In recent months, the Asian country has called for “all possible efforts to protect civilians and avoid an even worse humanitarian disaster.”

To a question about the recognition of the Palestinian State by Spain, Ireland and Norway, spokesman Wang Wenbin indicated last week that China “supports the cause of the Palestinian people,” although he noted that “the priority is to implement resolution 2728 of United Nations” to “immediately end the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.”

Beijing has also expressed support for the ‘two-state solution’, and its officials have held numerous meetings with representatives of Arab and Muslim countries to reaffirm this position or try to advance peace talks.
