An old acquaintance could return to Yankee Stadium and it is the experienced Dominican pitcher Luis Severino, who could return to the New York Yankees and leave his current team, New York Mets, which he joined at the beginning of 2024.

According to a report by ESPN journalist Buster Olney, the Yankees would seek to add depth to the best rotation in the Major Leagues currently, despite still not having the Cy Young winner in the American League, Gerrit Cole, and for this they would be thinking in Severino who is an old acquaintance and has already played for eight years with the Mulos, since its premiere in 2015.

“With all 30 teams increasingly relying on relievers, and with the rash of injuries to starters, there may be few starting pitchers available at the deadline. “Severino is pitching effectively early this season, posting a 3.22 ERA in his first 10 starts, with four home runs allowed and 50 strikeouts in 58.2 innings,” Olney began explaining the report.

Later, the reporter assured that a key part of the transaction would be the low cost that Severino would have, who before the start of the season signed a contract with the Mets for just $13 million dollars for 2024.

“His contract wouldn’t be expensive either. Severino signed a one-year, $13 million deal in hopes of having a bounce-back season before re-entering the free agent market. And having spent his entire career in New York, he has playoff experience, which would make him a candidate,” he added.

So far those around the Yankees have not commented on the matter. It is only known that the plan to be executed by Aaron Boone with the return of Cole would be a rotation of six starters made up of Carlos Rodón, Néstor Cortés, Marcus Stroman, Clarke Schmidt and also the Dominican Luis Gil.

In any case, a hypothetical return of Luis Gil to the Bronx would not go badly and he could assume a role from the bullpen, similar to the one he had during his second season with the Yankees in 2016, starting 11 games and another 11 games assuming a role as a reliever.
