The trial for the death of Diego Armando Maradona, which was to begin on June 4, has been postponed to October 1, according to judicial sources reported this Wednesday, cited by EFE. The process will take place in the Oral Criminal Court No. 3 of San Isidro, province of Buenos Aires.

“The designated trial hearing, whose start was set as of June 4, 2024, must be suspended and rescheduled for identical purposes, and maintaining the scheme established in the resolution of 3/18/24, starting on day 1 October 2024, at 9:30 a.m.,” states the document to which EFE had access.

The rescheduling of the trial is due to an appeal filed by one of the nurses accused in the case, according to a document to which the EFE agency had access. The new date, however, could be modified again due to the appeal presented by the nurse’s defense.

This trial is investigating the alleged medical negligence that would have led to Maradona’s death, which occurred on November 25, 2020. Eight people are charged with the crimes of “simple homicide with possible intent” and “lack of professional compliance.”

Among those accused are Maradona’s personal doctor, Leopoldo Luque; the psychiatrist Susana Cosachov; the nurse Mario Baudry; the coordinating doctor of the Swiss Medical social work, Nancy Forti; the nursing coordinator, Ricardo Omar Almirón; the doctor from the Swiss Medical social work, Silvia Maddoni; the nurse Matías Ezequiel Bravo; and the anesthetist Nerina Lapegna.

The case has generated great expectation in Argentina and the world, due to the figure of Maradona and the circumstances surrounding his death. The Argentine soccer idol died at the age of 60 due to cardiac arrest, while he was at his home in Tigre, province of Buenos Aires.

The outcome of the trial could have a significant impact on Argentine society, as it could set a precedent in terms of medical liability and negligence in cases of public figures.
