The US Departments of Justice and Labor penalized a Virginia technology company that advertised a job offer “only for whites” and those born in the country.
According to the DOJ, the company Arthur Grand Technologies Inc. violated the Immigration and Nationality Act by publishing a job advertisement “only” for white Americans within 60 miles of Dallas, Texas, in March of last year.
The two government entities reached separate agreements with the company. Likewise, Deputy Attorney General Kristen Clarke condemned Arthur Grand’s actions and stressed the illegality of its discriminatory practices, while Michele Hodge of the Department of Labor criticized the company and reiterated its commitment to holding contractors accountable. .
The ad, posted by a recruiter at Arthur Grand’s India branch, appeared on Indeed and caused public outrage.
Additionally, it unlawfully deterred individuals, including foreign-born U.S. citizens and certain non-U.S. citizens, from applying.
As part of the agreements, Arthur Grand will pay civil penalties and compensation to affected individuals, review its workplace policies, and provide training on compliance with federal laws.
For its part, the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), the oldest Hispanic civil rights organization in the United States, rejected what happened.
“It is a shame that private companies require this level of oversight to maintain basic decency. In the absence of concrete evidence of change, we must assume that such discriminatory practices will persist,” LULAC lamented.
