Washington – The Secretary of Homeland Security of the United States, Alejandro Mayorkas, will lead his country’s delegation at the presidential inauguration of Nayib Bukele on June 1 in El Salvador, US President Joe Biden announced this Wednesday in a statement.

The person responsible for US immigration policy will be accompanied by Biden’s main advisor for Latin America, Daniel Erikson; the head of the State Department for Latin America, Brian Nichols; and the North American ambassador in El Salvador, William Duncan.

The undersecretary of International Trade, Marisa Lago, and the assistant secretary for Refugees and Migration, Julieta Valls Noyes, will also be part of the delegation.

Bukele will be sworn in next Saturday after having won his re-election in the February elections with 86.4% of the votes thanks to his high popularity for his tough policy against organized crime and gangs in El Salvador, however highly criticized. by human rights organizations.

The large US delegation that will travel to the Central American country is a new demonstration of Biden’s willingness to cooperate on immigration matters with El Salvador, despite the fact that his government has been critical of the human rights situation under Bukele’s first term.
