A person in New York won $1 million dollars by guessing 2nd place in the drawing on Monday the 27th, Memorial Day, in the Powerball lottery.
The New York State Lottery announced that the ticket was purchased at the Liquorium store in Saint James, Suffolk County, Long Island.
Monday’s Powerball winning numbers were: 9-30-39-49-59 with the Powerball number 21. The ticket matched all five numbers, but was missing the Powerball ball and that’s why it took 2nd place.
The odds of winning the 2nd place prize are 1 in 11,688,053.52, the radio station noted. The New 96.1 FM. No one won the big prize on Monday or last night, so the Powerball amount for the next drawing on Saturday now stands at $161 million, with an estimated cash value of $75.2 million if the lump sum payment is chosen.
This week another Long Island resident claimed the $5 million jackpot from the Cash X100 scratch-off game. On April 15, another person in New York won $1 million by matching all five numbers in the Powerball. That ticket was purchased at a Wegmans supermarket located in the town of Cicero, Onondaga County.
In March, someone won $1.13 billion on the Mega Lottery in New Jersey, the largest jackpot ever won in that state. Their identity may never be revealed because a law there allows winners to remain anonymous.
Bettors can securely check their tickets in the New York Lottery app or on the official Powerball and Mega Millions pages. Players have up to one calendar year from the time of the drawing to claim their prizes.
The New York Lottery remains the largest and most profitable in North America, contributing $3.7 billion in fiscal year 2022-2023 to help support K-12 public education across the state.
According to statistics, New York is the “luckiest” state in the US for the number of jackpot winners in the Powerball and Mega Millions lotteries in recent decades.
