New York – The El Nuevo Día Poll practically two days before the primaries in Puerto Rico showed that Jenniffer González and Pedro Pierluisi, candidates for the gubernatorial candidacy for the New Progressive Party (PNP), are virtually tied.
The second round of poll results, released this Friday, indicates that the resident commissioner leads her rival, the incumbent Pedro Pierluisi, governor of the island, by about two percentage points.
Specifically, González received 51% of the favor of the participants in the consultation, while Pierluisi, 49%.
It should be noted that these numbers fall just within the sample’s margin of error, which is plus or minus 4%.
In the previous survey by El Nuevo Día, the newspaper with the largest circulation on the island, carried out in March, González obtained 53% support and Pierluisi, 45%.
In the previous analysis, 2% said they were unsure how they would vote. Looking at it from this angle, González lost two points, from 53% to 51%, while Pierluisi gained four, from 45% to 49%.
The trend toward a tie is repeated in the new survey when the results are examined by demographic group and age.
Among men, for example, Pierluisi reached 52% of support compared to 48% for his opponent. In the case of female voters, González surpasses Pierluisi, with figures of 54% versus 46%.
The distances in results are more notable in lines such as geographical area. In the case of residents in the metropolitan area, Pierluisi leads González by eight percentage points, or 54% versus 46%. In the rest of the island, González prevails six percentage points over Pierluisi, or 53% versus 47%.
On the other hand, it is striking that the commissioner surpasses the governor among voters with a lower level of education. Under this aspect, the difference is 55% over 45%.
Likewise, the measurement focused on annual family income levels showed that González prevails over Pierluisi among members with incomes less than $20,000 dollars, 54% versus 46%, respectively.
The El Nuevo Día Survey was based on a sample of 1,500 adults ages 18 and older registered with the State Election Commission (CEE) to vote in the primaries this coming Sunday, June 2.
The interviews were personal, house to house, throughout Puerto Rico, between May 22 and 26.
In addition to being registered or being willing to sign the document showing affiliation with the PNP, participants had to have a “definite” or “probable” degree of certainty that they would vote in the primaries. Participants who voted in advance were also included.
