The president of the World Boxing Council (WBC), Mauricio Sulaimán, showed his rejection of the position that the various world boxing organizations such as the International Boxing Federation (FIB) have been taking with respect to the recent measure to auction the fight of the undisputed super middleweight champion, Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez, with his mandatory challenger William Scull.

In statements offered to Izquierdazo, Sulaimán highlighted that the organizations always tend to agree to see who will be the next challenger of a fighter if he is an undisputed champion and Canelo Álvarez would precisely have to face David Benavídez for being the one designated by the World Boxing Council; Given this fact, he regretted what the FIB is doing at this moment.

“This has been very clear for a long time, that the leader of the World Boxing Council is the one next. So it is difficult to understand,” said the WBC president after seeing that Scull was named as his mandatory challenger without having reached a prior agreement.

“I can’t tell you anything because there is no order. It is a shame that there is no reciprocity, there is no order, there are no agreements, no type of agreement is respected,” Sulaimán highlighted in his statements.

“It’s difficult because there are regulations and boxing is a highly legal sport. When they put themselves in positions where other groups have abuse of a position, that is where situations like this occur,” he added.

This measure could cause Canelo Álvarez to lose his International Boxing Federation belt; For this reason, Sulaimán maintained that he has always supported the idea of having unified champions and mandatory rivals, which is why he assured that the only person responsible for what happens in the future is the FIB.

“I have no comments, the World Boxing Council has been very clear in its actions in every way. We have sought unification, fights for the undisputed, we have had the entire process, the flexibility to achieve the great fights. But they are things that are foreign to the Council, to Canelo, to boxing,” he concluded.
