Jaime Lozano, technical director of the Mexican National Team, has called up seven forwards, but only six will travel to the 2024 Copa América. However, the seven forwards called by Lozano have together scored 100 goals in their clubs during the last year, among them which highlights Santiago Giménez, who scored 26 goals with Feyenoord.
Lozano has decided to leave out experienced figures such as Raúl Jiménez, Hirving Lozano and Henry Martín, opting for a young and renewed forward, led by Santi Giménez and is formed as follows:
- Santiago Giménez (Feyenoord): 26 goals in 41 games.
- Julián Quiñones (América): 18 goals in 41 games.
- Guillermo Martínez (Pumas): 18 goals in 38 games.
- Uriel Antuna (Cruz Azul): 14 goals in 38 games.
- César Huerta (Pumas): 11 goals in 37 games.
- Alexis Vega (Toluca/Chivas): 7 goals in 25 games.
- Marcelo Flores (Tigres): 6 goals in 25 games.
Lozano will have to make the difficult decision to cut one of these forwards before the tournament. The choice will not be easy, since everyone has shown a good level.
Some of the players who could be left out are César Huerta, due to his poor performance in Clausura 2024, and Marcelo Flores, who is still adapting to Mexican soccer.
Lozano’s final decision will depend on several factors, such as performance in upcoming friendlies, physical fitness and chemistry with the team.
Without a doubt, the Tri forward has a promising future. The young players called up by Lozano have the potential to become important figures in the coming years.
The Copa América will be a good opportunity for these forwards to prove their worth and compete for a place in the senior team.
