Renowned actor Robert De Niro will no longer receive the prestigious award from the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) after he gave a speech against former President Donald Trump outside the trial in Manhattan this week.
NAB was to honor De Niro with the NAB Leadership Foundation’s Service to America Award next week. However, the “proudly bipartisan” group rescinded the award after the New York actor appeared at a Biden-Harris press conference and criticized the Republican as a “danger” to Americans who “want to destroy” the city of New York and the country.
“This event is proudly bipartisan and unites people from across the political spectrum to celebrate the impactful work of local broadcasters and our partners,” a NAB representative told The Hill.
“While we strongly support the right of all Americans to exercise free speech and participate in civic engagement, it is clear that Mr. De Niro’s recent high-profile activities will create a distraction from the philanthropic work we hoped to recognize,” he stated. the spokesperson. “To maintain the focus on serving the award winners, Mr. De Niro will no longer attend the event.”
De Niro, who was yelled at by protesters at the press conference, alleged that Trump doesn’t “belong” in New York City, Fox News reported.
“I hope this new advertising campaign comes out of the bubble to remind its followers of the danger it represents to our lives. This is not a threat. This is our reality. And that’s why I joined the Biden-Harris campaign, because the only way to preserve our freedoms and hold on to our humanity is to vote for Joe Biden for president,” the two-time Oscar winner said of Trump on Tuesday.
“I owe a lot to this city. And that’s why it’s so strange that Donald Trump is across the street because he doesn’t belong in my town. “I don’t know where it belongs, but it certainly doesn’t belong here,” De Niro continued. “We New Yorkers used to tolerate him when he was just another dirty real estate scammer disguised as a big shot.”
After he finished his comments, the situation quickly descended into chaos when the former president’s followers interrupted the interpreter. The Godfather when he left the podium. He even got into a shouting match with a guy in a MAGA hat who called him a “washed up actor.”
The president and his vice president were not present during the event where De Niro was outside the courthouse in New York.
For his part, Trump called De Niro “pathetic” and “crazy” on social media after losing his composure.
Likewise, De Niro wished the NAB the best after learning that he would not receive the award.
“I support the work of the NAB Leadership Foundation and would like to express my appreciation and gratitude for what the Foundation has done and will continue to do for the good of us all, and I wish them the best for their continued good work,” De Niro told to The Hill.
