The president of the National Electoral Institute (INE) of Mexico, Guadalupe Taddei, asked for “serenity and respect” to the political parties and candidates, who have gone ahead to name themselves winners without waiting for the official results of the elections this Sunday, June 2 .

“I call on all political actors, the candidates and their teams to maintain serenity and respect for the established procedures,” said the president advisor in a video published on the INE social networks.

Candidates come forward to say that they won

While Taddei offered his message, the leader of the ruling National Regeneration Movement (Morena), Mario Delgado, declared the official candidate Claudia Sheinbaum as “the first female president of Mexico.”

And, moments before, the opponent Xóchitl Gálvez affirmed that “she already won,” although she asked to wait “until the last vote is counted.”

Historic election day

The president of the electoral authority assured that Mexico has experienced a “historic” day and mentioned that at 8:00 p.m. central Mexico, the Preliminary Electoral Results Program (PREP) will be revealed.

The counselor thanked the citizens who worked on election day and highlighted that their work is important to safeguard the country’s democracy.

Likewise, he affirmed that each vote will count and will be counted in a clean and transparent manner, since the electoral system is designed to ensure that each result is verified in a “fair and transparent” manner.

Taddei assured that the INE works tirelessly to guarantee the integrity of each stage of the electoral process.

The main contest will define who will succeed the president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who expects the triumph of Sheinbaum, over Gálvez, from the Fuerza y Corazón por México coalition, and Jorge Álvarez Máynez, from Movimiento Ciudadano (MC).

Mexico has the largest election in its history with more than 98 million people called to renew more than 20,000 positions, including the presidency, the 500 deputies, the 128 senators and 9 state governments.

But they have also been the most violent, with 22 murdered candidates recognized by the Government, although independent groups record more, such as the consulting firm Integralia, which raises the figure to around 250 political homicides by including advisors, officials, family members and collateral victims.
