Andrés Manuel López Obrador, outgoing president of Mexico, celebrated the victory of Claudia Sheinbaum, a candidate supported by his government, and highlighted the democracy experienced during election day, which were the most massive in the country’s history.

“I am very happy and proud to be the president of an exemplary people, the people of Mexico. The election day showed that it is a very politicized town, with a strong democratic vocation,” declared López Obrador in a video uploaded on his social networks.

The Mexican president concluded his message by congratulating all Mexican citizens: “The name of Mexico was once again placed in the heights, it is a pride to be Mexican.”

The official candidate achieved victory over the opposition Xóchitl Gálvez with between 58.3% and 60.7% of the votes, while her challenger obtained between 26.6% and 28.6% of the votes, to become the first female president in the country. Meanwhile, Jorge Álvarez Máynez, opponent of the Citizen Movement (MC), received between 9.9% and 10.8% of votes.

“I am also grateful because, for the first time in 200 years of the republic, I will become the first female president of Mexico. And, as I have said on other occasions, I do not arrive alone, we all arrive with our heroines who gave us our homeland, with our ancestors,” Sheinbaum said after obtaining the victory in a message in Mexico City.

The results of the National Electoral Institute (INE) in the quick count were based on a representative statistical sample of 5,651 voting centers. The method allows for a convincing projection of who the winner will be with a confidence level of at least 95%.

Sunday’s election day was the largest in the history of Mexico, with more than 98 million people called to vote not only for the presidency, but for the 500 deputies, 128 senators and nine state governments. It has also been marked by violence, with at least 30 aspirants killed.
