A couple “fishing using magnets” as metal detectors found $100,000 in cash inside a safe at the bottom of a pond in Queens (NYC).

James Kane and Barbie Agostini were fishing in Flushing Meadows Corona Park when they made the surprising discovery, the network reported NY 1.

Kane said they had previously found many old safes, but they were usually empty or filled with plastic bags. Agostini said she had been stunned to see the cash. “Once I saw the real dollars… and the security tapes, I was lost.”

Kane and Agostini have a YouTube channel where they chronicle their work as “magnetic fishermen,” using metal detectors to find various objects in bodies of water. But his discovery on Friday was his biggest prize yet.

Kane and Agostini said they went to the NYPD with the find, to find out if the safe belonged to someone or if it was involved in a crime in some way. But police were unable to connect her to any case or person and have yet to make public comments.

“I guess the find-and-stay rule has worked for us,” Kane said. The bills suffered serious water damage. Kane described them as “soaked” and “practically destroyed.”

Kane and Agostini said they started magnet fishing during the COVID-19 pandemic because they were bored. Some of his other finds include grenades from World War II, weapons from the 19th century and a bag of foreign coins, he noted. DailyNews.

In a similar case, recently in New Jersey three cars were found in a river. Inside one of them was a body that was later identified as a woman who disappeared in the summer of 2010.

Days later, also in New Jersey, human remains found submerged in a stream were identified as belonging to a man missing since 1982, prosecutors said.
