Singer Demi Lovato shared her experience finding the “ray of light and hope” in herself after battling mental health issues, substance abuse and eating disorders.

During a charity event at The Center for Youth Mental Health in New York, the former Disney girl opened up about how she managed to move forward after receiving five hospital treatments.

“I have been in hospital treatment five times and every time I returned to a treatment center I felt defeated,” she said during her participation.

About the fifth time the interpreter was admitted, she assured that “she definitely felt different.”

“I felt like I had hit rock bottom and I knew what I had to do, which was to live a life in recovery,” he said. “And that was something I rejected for a long time.”

“I also needed the right medication. I think medication has helped me enormously. “It has helped a lot of people a lot,” he added.

The actress also explained that she found a ray of hope by refocusing on her work and continuing her treatment in order to improve.

“I know that experience firsthand, but I think I found the ray of hope when I started taking action because when I started doing it, whether it was a job, a program, or talking to my treatment team and building relationships.”

“I think that ray of hope began to change when I began to find joy in the little things in life. And that was something that was very strange to me before because I was very used to it, very used to not seeing hope,” she shared.

During the talk, the composer also expressed that after treatments and medication she has understood that her mental health problems do not define her identity.

“It wasn’t until I went into treatment for the first time that I realized this is not who I am. It’s just a part of what makes me who I am, meaning my struggles have shaped me into the pottery you see today, but it’s never become my identity since.”

“It’s just become something about me that makes me a little interesting, I guess you could say,” he said, then thanked “for the things he’s been through and what he’s overcome.”
