An elderly man lost his life in a car accident in Washington, DC after allegedly carrying out a car theft, local authorities reported, noting that the victim was sitting as a passenger before the fatal crash.

The tragic incident occurred Monday afternoon at Washington Hospital Center. Police reports indicated that the driver had exited the car upon arriving at the hospital, at which point the suspect took the opportunity to steal the vehicle. The driver immediately reported the theft to police, stating that his elderly father was still inside the vehicle.

Shortly after the robbery, a patrol officer observed the vehicle crash into a building at Sixth and D streets, near the DCUS Prosecutor’s Office downtown. The suspect attempted to flee the scene, but the officer was able to capture her and arrest him.

The elderly man, after the accident, was found unconscious at the scene and was immediately transported to the emergency room in critical condition. However, he was pronounced dead shortly after.

For their part, police have confirmed that the crashed vehicle was the same one that had been reported stolen. The U.S. Attorney’s Office is currently being consulted on what charges will be filed against the suspect.

The incident remains the subject of an ongoing investigation, and the names of the victims and suspect have not been released to the public.

The DC Fire Department, meanwhile, has reported that there was only superficial damage to the exterior of the building involved in the accident.
