An incident left a community in Waverly, Nebraska, shocked when a 74-year-old woman who was pronounced dead at a nursing home was found alive at a local funeral home.

The woman, who was a resident of a nursing home called The Mulberry at Waberly, was reportedly pronounced dead at 9:44 a.m. local time on Monday and was later taken to the Butherus-Maser Funeral Home. & Love, in Lincoln, for arrangements.

However, in a turn of events that shocked people at the funeral home, an employee noticed that the woman was still breathing when he was preparing her body for the funeral. Immediately, 911 was called and Lincoln Fire and Rescue responded, transporting the woman to a local hospital. The 74-year-old woman’s identity has not been revealed due to privacy laws, USA Today reported.

According to Lancaster County sheriff’s officials, the woman was alive Monday afternoon. However, before being declared dead, the woman was in a palliative care center, and she was treated by a doctor who was responsible for confirming her death certificate.

Lancaster County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Ben Houchin described the incident as “very unusual” at a news conference Monday: “I’ve been doing this for 31 years and nothing like this has ever gotten to this point before,” he said. .

At the moment, the incident is being investigated by the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office, whose chief deputy clarified that they do not believe there is any criminal intent in the case.
