Ashley Smith, a 37-year-old immigrant from Jamaica, was found dead with a cut on her neck at a house where a party was being held in The Bronx (NYC).

New York City police are investigating the homicide of Smith, a Mount Vernon resident and mother of three. She was found dead in the Williamsbridge neighborhood.

Officers from the 47th Precinct arrived at 1418 Oakley St shortly after 6 a.m. Saturday following a 911 call about a woman who had been assaulted, police said. Smith was unresponsive and she was pronounced dead a short time later at Jacobi Medical Center, he said. LoHud.com.

According to New York Post The crime occurred during a fight outside a house where a party had just ended and at the scene the police found a knife and a broken liquor bottle. It is unclear whether those were the weapons used or Smith’s possible connection to the celebration.

His family has created a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for funeral expenses. “Ashley was taken from us too soon and she did not deserve to leave us in such a horrible way,” her mother Monique wrote. “My daughter was an energetic, fun-loving soul. Not only was she a mother, she was a daughter, sister and niece.”

In mid-May, also in the Bronx, a 29-year-old Latina was stabbed outside her building while leaving for work and accused her ex-boyfriend before dying.

In general, stabbings and cuts are common in New York City. There were 4,493 cases in 2023 until early December, an increase of 6% compared to the same period in 2022. In parallel, arrests for knife crimes increased almost 30%.

A previous NYPD report warned last August that fatal stabbings had risen 29% that year in the city compared to before the pandemic (2019). Attacks with knives have become more frequent in various scenarios: streets, buildings, homes, buses, Metro, parties, schools and even commercial establishments and ATM areas.
