A woman was raped and robbed at knifepoint inside a commercial building in Queens (NYC) and the attacker has not been arrested.

The crime happened around 10 pm on Thursday, May 30, at a commercial building near Northern Blvd. and 162nd St. in Flushing, the NYPD reported yesterday, releasing surveillance images of the suspect, who was caught passing through a grocery store near the site of the attack.

The rapist and robber confronted the 37-year-old victim, pulled out a knife and sexually assaulted her. Someone in the building heard the woman screaming and called 911. The attacker stole money and other belongings from the woman before running away.

No arrests have been made. Anyone with information should call 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) and in Spanish 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). Also through the website crimestoppers.nypdonline.org or by text message to 274637 (CRIMES), followed by TIP577. All communications are strictly confidential.

According to the NYPD, most rapes remain unreported. In the middle of last month, a fifteen-year-old girl fought bravely to avoid being raped by a man who approached her when she was walking through a park in the Bronx (NYC). Days later, a man was arrested on suspicion of repeatedly raping a 12-year-old girl he knew over a five-day period inside a building in The Bronx (NYC).

Also in May, a 71-year-old pastor was arrested for allegedly sexually abusing a fifteen-year-old girl in the basement of a church in Long Island (NY). At the beginning of that month, a woman suffered a brutal attack when she was dragged with a leash that was thrown around her neck and then abused when she was walking on a street in The Bronx (NYC).

At the end of April, a homeless man who was imprisoned for 11 years for abusing a young woman pleaded guilty to committing the same crime against two older women by invading their homes on Long Island (NY).

In a similar case, in 2023 a registered sex offender who was on parole was sentenced to 37 years to life in prison for the brutal assault and rape of a Korean visitor on a sidewalk in Koreatown, Manhattan in 2021.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) published a 2020 study that calls sexual violence in older adults “a major public health problem with a major impact on victims and their peers, their descendants, and the community,” but that has been little investigated.

In April 2023, José Carabantes Pineda was sentenced to 23 years in prison after pleading guilty to tying up and sexually assaulting a girl in a commercial parking lot in Long Island (NY).
